Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father was a carnival barker, was killed when she was a small little girl. This forced her mother to provide for her family through work as waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth was raised in the poor Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She went to school in Boston. But she only stayed in the school for two years, before going on to pursue an acting profession. It was not without challenges. After obtaining a position at New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she had a difficult time trying to secure jobs for stage. While in New York, she worked at a bar as the check-in lady before resigning after a few months and moving to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a steady actor. Earned money performing during the daytime working as an Usherette. Also, she studied drama. She later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
